A bus of teenagers, dressed to brace the cold, are on their way to Boston Mills/Brandywine Ski Resort. Eighteen students in all make up Streetsboro’s ski club: 11 middle schoolers and seven high schoolers, excited to learn and enjoy skiing. Members ski and snowboard five times with the club, but once the season ends, each receives a pass for four extra trips to Boston Mills.

The club’s last trip this year was February 8, and even with the unseasonable warmth, did not end up missing any scheduled days.

Some members have also ended up going with family and friends during and after the club’s time.

Senior Molly Harris has been in ski club for three years and said she prefers snowboarding to skiing. “I love ski club because you get to go off and do whatever you want,” she said. “You can ski with friends. If you’ve never done it before, you can learn how; it’s just fun and interactive.”

Adviser Connor Yeager noted that the club is  a great way to stay active in the cold winter months.

“I enjoy seeing how excited the students get when they are learning to ski or snowboard for the first time,” he said. “I also still love skiing myself on our ski club nights, because once you learn skiing, it is a lifetime skill, one that you can continue throughout life.”

Junior Miranda Mordue said she was originally taught by her brother and has been snowboarding for three years since.

“It’s nice to be able to hang out with friends and to have an activity to do out in the winter,” she said.

Mordue has improved her skills since joining, she said. “It was helpful to actually have a professional teach me.”

The cost to join ski club is $164 for those with their own equipment, and $224 for those who need to rent. The cost includes transportation.

Club membership saves students $388 on the regular cost of nine trips, five with the club, and four extra.

The cost of renting equipment without the club discount would be  $612 for the nine trips.

Their ski club membership ends up costing members $224.
