Upcoming Indoor Track Season
Robb Kidd has been coaching track in Streetsboro since 2000 but this year will likely be a season like no other.
Indoor track is already facing COVID limitations, Kidd said, in terms of “how and where we train and compete, the types of workouts we can do and probably the number of athletes who come out for the winter.”
The fate of the season is in a “wait and see scenario,” Kidd said. “We have so many possible factors that could limit us…First, we must wait for the fall sports to conclude. Then we need to assess the risk vs reward options, see what meets will even run this year and also what options we have to use the training facilities here at SHS. This is just the beginning. If all goes ideally, I will handle most of the training and prep work since my assistant coaches are usually tied into coaching other sports.”
Even though indoor track had a good season, looking back at last year’s spring track season, which did not happen due to the first COVID surge, Kidd acknowledged the athletes who lost their shot at improvement and success.
“It was so hard to see so many great young people denied their last chance of competition,” he said. “Many were three-year state qualifiers and never got the chance to finish their careers the way they deserved.”
Despite losing stars to graduation, new, young, talented athletes are ready to step into the Varsity roles.
Taking advantage of the “more laid-back, non-mandatory training season” will hopefully prepare Rocket track athletes for an “amazing season, indoor or spring.”
Kidd said he intends to ensure a great season by making sure the athletes know his “team first, all together work ethic. Attitude and effort and positive and maximized always,” is part of his philosophy. “We put the team first and do what is in the best interest of success..however that is measured.”
